Job Descriptions That Work
A job description is more than a list of duties — it’s a foundation for every part of your hiring process.
A well-written job description helps you and your team understand exactly what success looks like in a role. It’s also a guide for candidates, setting clear expectations before they even apply.
At Parmar Staffing, we encourage every employer to treat the job description as a living document — one that grows with your business, rather than something written once and forgotten.
Why Clear Job Descriptions Matter
A strong job description helps you:
-
Define the purpose and priorities of the role
-
Align expectations between hiring manager and candidate
-
Create fair and consistent interview questions
-
Support onboarding and long-term performance reviews
When a role is clearly defined, you’re more likely to hire someone who thrives — not just someone who fits the basic criteria.
How to Write a Job Description That Works
A great job description balances detail with clarity. Aim for two to three pages that include everything important without overwhelming the reader.
1. Role purpose
Explain why the role exists and how it contributes to the business.
2. Key responsibilities
List the main tasks and accountabilities. Keep each point specific and action-oriented.
3. Required skills and experience
Separate essentials from desirables. This helps both hiring managers and candidates assess fit quickly.
4. Qualifications and certifications
Include relevant technical, industry or academic qualifications — but avoid unnecessary requirements that could exclude good candidates.
5. Personal attributes
Describe the qualities and behaviours that make someone successful in your culture (for example: problem-solving, collaboration, communication).
6. Success measures
What will “good” look like in this role after 3, 6 or 12 months? Measurable outcomes help focus the role and set future review targets.
Keep It Relevant and Realistic
Job descriptions that list everything someone might ever do in the role can discourage strong candidates from applying.
Focus on what matters most right now, and update it as your business evolves.
Tip: If the role changes, revisit the job description immediately. Keeping it current avoids confusion later and supports better performance management.
